Boone Dog

He's getting absolutely, positively H U G E!! I wanted the biggest dog I could get and boy did we ever find him. Meet Boone. He's my adorable, loveable, goofy Great Dane pup of about 15 wks of age. He's a mess and I dearly adore him. Peyton and the rest of the family have adjusted well and everyone's getting along these days. Can't wait till he's 150lbs and lays all over my back porch. :)

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to take some very casual photos of my best friend's 5mo old twins, Jackson and Olivia. We had so much fun turning her dining room into a makeshift studio and I was surprised that a few fairly decent photos came out of the mess! :) I'm by no means a professional or antyhing close to, but for a thrown-together shoot with a blanket, some window light and a reflector - not too shabby. *L*

A Long December

There's a Counting Crows song titled "Long December" that Ben and I play every year on New Year's Eve. The chorus goes "It's been a long December and there's reason to believe that maybe this year will be better than the last." That pretty much sums up this month perfectly. It's been an incredibly long month, full of ups and mostly downs. But at the end of it all - I'm still hopeful for the new year to come and looking forward to the changes it's sure to bring.

It's times like these that make me truly miss my normal, everyday life... weekends spent at home with the hubby and the pups, slow trips down a long dirt road, evenings in front of our cozy fireplace and hour-long, relaxing baths with a good book. I've been back and forth between Waycross and here so much lately that I barely have enough time to wash my laundry and re-pack for the next trip home. Mom's still in CCU, but doing better. Hopefully, January will bring lots of hope for her, as well. So, thank you to those who have hung in there with us and supported us throughout this long month, and here's to the New Year and all the little promises of happier times it carries with it.

Mom's Visit

Mama, Nanny and my niece, Brandie came for a visit a couple of weekends ago and we had a wonderful time. Ate dinner together at the house Friday night and spend Saturday shopping in Savannah. Then Ben and I took them down to our favorite resturaunt on River Street Sat. night for dinner. We had a wonderful time by the water. Feeling the lovely breeze off the water, watching the big container ships go by. Even spotted a dolphin or two. It was a good evening - and it's evenings like that that makes me love living in Savannah.

House Update!

We're officially in! Finally all moved in and settled down. The house feels like home now. Still work to do on the yards and such, but it feels wonderful to be living out in the Wilson Woods. :)

What I wouldn't give to go back to those simple childhood summers where everything was slow and easy.

Saw this adorable croquet set on Pottery Barn's website and it instantly took me back to those hot summers I spent at my dad's in Amarillo, TX. We used to play croquet in the backyard and I remember just how much fun it was to do something so simple and different from what we did back home at my mom's house in GA. I totally loved the game and I'm seriously going to get this cute little set so that one day I can play in my backyard with my kids and start a whole new set of memories of long, lazy summers. :)

Crazy life!!

Wow - what a hectic few weeks it's been!! We're still going nonstop on the house and it's starting to look wonderful! The brick is all up and looks fantastic, we're still sanding and priming the sheetrock and should be done with that soon and we'll be able to start on the finish coat of paint. We've had friends chip in and help hang the trim around all the windows, baseboards and crown moulding. Just a ton of work left to do!!

{and a little side note - we are fixing the archway in the living room/kitchen - the completely retarded guy that framed our house built it all the way to the ceiling and we - being first time home builders - didn't know better and we figured out after we had already sheetrocked, sanded and primed the archway that there was no way to incorporate the crown moulding across that arch!!!!!!! The framer should have left a header across the top and created the arch from that.... so that we still had a straight space to run the moulding! So, now my poor husband is having to go back and re-frame out the arch and re-sheetrock it, re-sand it, and re-prime it. :( Just another one of those lessons learned the hard way!}

Ben and I did get to pick out our granite countertops this past weekend and I'm IN LOVE!!!! I think I can honestly say that I'm more excited about those countertops that we picked out than I am about anything else!They are positively breathtaking and we should be able to install the cabinets and countertops in another three to four weeks.

So, it's all coming together - just another couple of months now (pray to God it's less than that!!) and we'll officially be the Wilsons on New Town Road. :)

We have brick!

It's been a rough month out at the land and the new house. With all the rain that we've gotten here in South Ga, our front yards looks more like a swamp than anything else. And it's causing so much trouble for the big trucks that have to drive in and out of the driveway everyday. The cement truck got stuck in the backyard this past Friday and two days later, the truck that was delivering the sand for the brick mortar got stuck just off the driveway. What a weekend! We are getting to know the tow truck drivers very well at this point!

Other than that - we've started priming the sheetrock, the shingles are all up, the back patio and carport leading up to the garage have been poured and the really exciting thing is that our brick is going up! So fast too! So much left to do, but it's really taking shape now. Can't wait for y'all to see it too!

We celebrated St. Pat's a little early here in Savannah this year - the parade was on Friday, March 14th. A few of us from work took off and went downtown for the parade. We had a great time, walking around and making fun of the other freaks, drinking a couple of beer and just hanging out. Good times had by all!

There are so many decisions involved in this house! Makes my head spin just thinking about it! However, we did finally make a few desicions... our brick is called Old Fredericka with a khaki mortar, the cabinet stain we picked is called Huntley Brown and we're in the process of picking paint colors. We're thinking of Gunmetal for the bedroom (the name's horrible, but the color is lovely!) and a lighter creamy beige for the living room. Hmmmm.... still looking though!

We have sheetrock!! :)

Dining Table crisis!

Ben and I stopped by this store called The Warehouse here in Statesboro this past weekend. Not really intending to buy anything, I wanted to just look around. With Ben shuffling his feet behind me, asking every two mins "Can we go yet?", I was heading towards the front door when I saw it. In a sea of furniture and whatnots scattered around this vast, dark space, the darkness parted and a ray of light shone down on the most beautiful dining table I've ever seen. :) I stopped in my tracks and then walked slowly towards it, looking closely at it's lines, color, size... looking for something, anything at all wrong with it so that I could dismiss it and continue on. But the more I studied and analyzed, the more my heart just tumbled and I fell in love. Yes. With a table.

Now, before you all start calling me and referring me to your shrinks, I am NOT CRAZY. I promise (at least not any more so than the rest of you!). I have been LUSTING after this amazing table from Pottery Barn for more than a year now. I've bookmarked it on my computer, I've clipped it out of the catalog and put it into my "Inspiration" folder, I've shown it to Ben at least a dozen times. I've been wanting this thing forever! But priced at $1600 - just for the table - no chairs - there's no way in heaven or hell I could afford it, however perfect for my house it would be.

The point of this whole psycho rambling is that my happened-upon love of a table is an EXACT match to the perfect, ideal PB Montego dining table with a honey oak stain of my dreams!!! Same size, shape, lovely color and turned legs. Perfect replica. And the absolutely BEST part is the price - less than half the cost!! $679 to be exact. Within my budget - if I max out my credit card, that is! And then there's still the issue of chairs... need to find some to match it. But I'm determined to get this table. I couldn't live with myself if I let it pass by!!!!

Here's the PB version of it... a large, chunky yet sophisticated version of an old farmhouse table. Loves it, loves it, loves it!!!

I've been re-reading Brook Jenson's Letting Go of the Camera again and it never ceases to amaze me how much insight he has into the mind and heart of artists. His words are full of warm inspiration and a cold dose of reality all rolled into one book and I love it.

"Be careful of allowing yourself the freedom of creativity; it might just shatter the limits of everything you now know. Creativity - the life of an artist - is not for the timid. You might find that you make some pretty awful art - on this trust me, I know. And not everyone will like or respect, (or buy, or understand) your work. But you will find that there are those who will "get it" and it is for these people and yourself that you create. It is for the process of exploring and finding, failing and finding, finding and sharing that you create."

Isn't this sooooooooo very true!?! Artmaking is such a personal endeavor - a deeply personal endeavor - and it's so very hard to share that with the outside world, knowing that the majority will not understand why you were compelled to create this at all.

I just heard the most wonderful news the other day - my cousin Rachel, who is a newlywed, is expecting! This will be her and JJ's first child and I couldn't be more thrilled for them! I was at their wedding this past year, and I took their wedding photos for them. I remember when Rachel wasn't even a teenager - just kids! I'm only a few years older than her, but I feel like a proud mama at how well she's doing for herself and her little family.

Congrats, Rachel - I'm tickled pink for you! :)

I'm totally in lust with this bathroom from Pottery Barn. Wish, wish, WISH I could afford such things... but I will have to settle for the knockoff. We are getting custom cabinets made throughout the house, so it should be easy to get the same finish of the cabinets, and we already have the venetian bronze faucets... now we just need to find that gorgeous countertop and sink!

Ben and I have been looking at paint colors recently. Got to make some decisions in that department in a week or so, and we've been having a rough time of it. So, I started looking back through my Inspiration folder on my computer (divided into so many sub-categories that I don't know what's what, and where from and who did!! - New Year's Resolution #458 - Get Organized!!) to see if I could find some great ideas... and of course, I did! Just not necessarily for wall color!

Here are a few of my favs... and please bear with me - I'm not sure where all these photos come from, so if you see something of yours, please let me know so I can give credit where credit is due!! :)

Love the baskets with tags hanging off identifying it's contents. :) So lovely and organized!!

Good color palette - B/W with pops of vintage blue and soft yellows... very modern and vintage at the same time. Hmmm.... that's a thought.

Blue Grey Monday

It's a dreary, rainy morning in south GA and if it was the weekend, I wouldn't mind a bit - knowing that I could curl up in my insanely HUGE, soft, warm bed and have a truly wonderful movie day. I'm in the mood for a little Jane Austen at the moment, so I would play a little Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. Lovely movies for a not-so-lovely day. But, (and isn't there always a but!) it's a Monday and I'm at work on a grey day, stuck in an equally grey cubicle.

So, to cheer myself up, I've been playing a little computer hooky from the ho-hum of my Monday morning by looking at one of my favorite artist's website. Alicia Bock is a truly wonderul photographer who produces these beautiful images of simple pleasures. In her own words - "My photography is the search of light and shadows, pretty things in pink, the feeling of the ocean, and a blue moon. I strive to create photographs that evoke memories of our favorite days." How can you not possibly fall in love with that notion!!

One of my absolute favorites of hers is titles "Blue Grey Monday" and I desperately want to own it!! Actually, I crave so many of her beautiful prints and as soon as we get the house built, I'm going to start acquiring them one by one. :) One day, one day... But I thought it appropriate for today.

Conspiracy Theory

I have this theory. And I have had it for quite some time and anyone who knows me has heard me say it at least ten times. This theory states that there are some days in our lives where the universe conspires against us. That Murphy's Law will apply and everything that can go wrong will. Well, I was happy to discover that I'm apparently not the only one with this theory. I discovered this bronze sign while checking out Design Crush and it perfectly applies to me. Made by the artist Jenny Holzer, it was recently acquired by MOMA. I'd like my own mini version to hang above my desk, please.

Handmade books

I have this fascination and appreciation for handmade books that is quickly becoming an obsession. I love the art of bookbinding and papermaking and I find so many beautiful books for inspiration. I'd love to spend some more time working on my own handmade books, but until I find a spare moment or two, I'll drool over these!

241 New Town Road

The Wilsons of New Town Road. That's us! We've been working really hard towards this dream of building our own home and it's finally becoming a reality. I can hardly believe that we've only owned this piece of land a little more than a year! Ben has spent countless hours out there, clearing and burning, leveling and digging. After a year's worth of work, we are finally building the home we've always dreamed of.

Seeing the whole process really makes you appreciate every little detail of the home and land that it sits on. We have six acres, mostly wooded. A small pond, which Ben dug himself. And a lovely little dock that Ben built for us. Peyton loves it down by the water! She's completely at home splashing back and forth, barking at us to throw the stick. The driveway is nice and long and sort of meanders it's way to the back of the property, where our work-in-progress now sits. We have a foundation now! And the framing is still going up. But I can see the shape of my living room and kitchen, the huge, FANTASTIC master bedroom closet, the two-car garage... all of it is slowly appearing before our eyes, board by board. 2350sq feet total... not including the garage and porches. Perfect size to settle down and start a family in (NOT YET PEOPLE! We're waiting for the little ones!) *L*

Well, here's to the holidays and looking back on a year that I can't believe actually happened to me. So many good things. Really good things. But, we're not done yet... lots more to come for the Wilsons on New Town Road.

What a year it has been! Graduation, Wedding in Maui and now actually starting on the new house! If it wasn't all true, I'd hardly believe any of it! Ben and I had such an amazing time in Hawaii. We couldn't have picked a better spot on earth to get married. We were standing at the edge of the water, barefoot in the sand. You could close your eyes and hear the sound of the surf and feel the breeze on your cheek. When I breathed in, I smelled the plumeria lei that was around my neck. Absolutely perfect!!

I love the end of this poem!! It feels like my life at the moment. I'm so concentrated on finishing this semster, and yet I have so many miles to go before I get a break - a rest. But I have to have trudge on because I've made a commitment to everyone and I've expectations to fulfill. It would be very easy to give up sometimes. To just go into those dark deep woods and lay down with my eyes closed... just breath. But - I'm so close to the end and there's nothing on this earth that could make me stop now. I don't care if I never use this degree in my life - I will at least have the knowledge that I did it. That I faced obstacles and worked hard and made my way. I'll still be the first person in my family to finish college... that's such a burden to be honest. It leaves little room for mistakes because so many people are looking to you to get it right.
